Inventories are not physical inventories of the applications & files themselves; they are a record of the risk meta-data associated with those files (Owner, User, Last Validated Date, latest data pertaining to self-assessment questionnaires & more). The inventory-as-a-service not only stores that information; it automates the periodic update process & manages the user administration & risk reporting.
